Last May, 92,987 home sales and purchases were reported, an increase of 145.9% y-o-y. The sharp rise is a consequence of the lockdown in Spain. Compared to May 2019, the figure for 2021 is only 1.1% lower.

In this month, 45,404 mortgages were granted. In comparison, this is 11,000 more than last year and 1,700 fewer than two years ago. 72.93% of the mortgages were for acquiring a home. Mortgages for this purpose are the ones that are recovering the fastest, close to pre-Covid levels.

Several autonomous communities are already reporting increased sales vis-à-vis  2019. Melilla stands out, with 34.9% more transactions; Aragon, up 14.1%; and Murcia, up 11.5%.

The Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands are were furthest from recovering to pre-pandemic levels. This May, there was 20% less transactional activity in the Atlantic archipelago and 15.8% less in the Balearics.
