According to the National Statistics Institute, more than 7.2 million overnight stays in hotels in May. Of these, 64.2% were by resident travellers. Foreign visitors accounted for 2.5 million overnight stays, compared to 4.6 million by Portuguese nationals.
The figure compared with May 2020 is 2,565.1% higher, though the country was under lockdown at the time and travel was impossible. On the other hand, compared to the same month in 2019, the figure is still 77.4% lower.
Between January and May 2021, hotel overnight stays fell by 53.6% compared to the same period in 2020. Those by Spaniards fell by 16.6%, while those of foreigners by 76.3%.
