
The number of households increased by 89,800 units in 2019, to exceed 18.6 million, up by 0.5% compared to the previous year. The population residing in family dwellings increased by 0.8%, whilst the average household size remained stable at 2.5 people. All figures are based on data published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Households occupied by two people were the most common in 2019, accounting for 30.4% of the total, followed by homes with one occupant, representing 25.7%. At the other end of the spectrum, homes with five or more people constituted 5.8% of the total; on average, they comprised 5.54 people and they accounted for 12.9% of the population.
