Last year, the creation of businesses experienced a decline due to the effect of the pandemic crisis that began in March. As such, the number of new mercantile companies registered fell by 15.8% in 2020 compared to the previous year, to a total of 79,151 companies, its biggest decline in 11 years.
That represented the lowest figure since 2009, according to data released on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). It is worth bearing in mind that the economy was already cooling in 2019. But the decline in 2020, motivated by the pandemic, was much higher than that registered in 2019 (-1.2%).
