The Standing Committee of the Balearic Parliament has validated a decree of urgent measures relating to housing, approved by the Government in late February, which includes the temporary transfer of public land to private property developers, amongst other measures, to encourage the construction of affordable housing, as reported by Europa Press.
The decree consists of a package of measures to increase the housing stock, protect vulnerable groups and fight price speculation, including forcing banks to offer social rental options before executing an eviction. It also includes introducing control mechanisms over large landowners and sanctions to pursue the advertising and commercialisation of substandard housing; as well as an increase in sanctions for large owners who fail to comply with the obligation to transfer empty properties.
