There were 35,225 new mortgages taken out on dwellings in May, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). This figure is 37.4% more than in the same month in 2020 and 10.4% more than in April.
In this way, the recovery of the mortgage market maintained the upward trend that began in March, after five months of declines. However, it is slightly lower than that recorded that month, when 36,886 mortgages were taken out.
In some regions, the comparison with the previous year, at the start of the de-escalation, is well above 100%. This is the case in Extremadura (150.3%), the Region of Murcia (133.2%) and the Principality of Asturias (104.9%).
The only region to see a fall was the Canary Islands (11%).
