Hotels and tourist accommodation have been open to the public since 11 May in those regions that were the first to move into Phase 1 of the exit from lockdown, albeit with certain restrictions in place.
Thanks to these reopenings, non-hotel tourist establishments – apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels – received visits from 42,150 travellers in May who registered more than 295,000 overnight stays. Nevertheless, that figure represents a decrease of 96.8% compared to the same month in 2019 with just 1.9% of the travellers and 3.2% of the overnight stays estimated a year ago, according to data published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
