Madrid to Transform the Facilities Leftover from its Failed Olympic Bid in the ‘Ciudad del Deporte’

The former Aquatic Center, now in disuse, has been classified as a unique facility for the implementation of a 'multi-functional' complex. Moreover, a proposal has been made to change the use of Atlético de Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium to a private sports facility.

Reinstating the now disused aquatic centre, promoting grassroots- and neighbourhood-sports in new facilities and increasing green areas are just some of the initiatives for reorganising the use of the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. The city of Madrid had planned to build several sports facilities on the site for the celebration of the 2020 Olympics.

The total surface area under management measures 1.2 million square metres. It is bordered (in a clockwise direction) by Plaza de Grecia, the Canillejas Metro depots, Calle Mequinenza, the northern stretch of the A-2 motorway, the M-40, Calle Estocolmo, the plots of several single-family homes and Avenida Arcentales.
