The mayor of Madrid has taken a step forward in the application of the moratorium to rental homes.

On Thursday, the Municipal Government of the Town Hall of Madrid agreed to establish a moratorium on the rental payments of the apartments owned by the Municipal Housing and Land Company (EMVS), which will benefit 6,000 families.

The purpose of the measure is “to alleviate the economic consequences of the coronavirus health crisis, especially for the most vulnerable groups”, explained the municipal council in a press release, which replicates the measure already implemented in Cataluña.

There, La Generalitat decreed a universal moratorium on the rental payments of all of the homes that form part of the public stock managed by the Agència de l’Habitatge de Catalunya. That measure will affect the 20,000 families who currently reside in those social housing properties.
