Hotel Occupancy Rates Plummeted by 64.3% in August

Overnight hotel stays have now recorded six months of negative rates. In August, the number of establishments open increased compared to July, even so, the figure was 23.2% lower than in 2019.

Overnight stays in hotels fell by 64.3% in August compared to the same month in 2019. These establishments received 5.8 million travellers, who made 16.8 million overnight stays, according to figures published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In August, the number of establishments open increased compared to July, from 12,068 to 13,008. Even so, that was 23.2% fewer than during the same month last year. Overall, 1,196,259 hotel beds were offered, equivalent to 61.4% of the total.
