With more than 1,639,900 inhabitants, Barcelona is the second most populous city in Spain, behind only Madrid. The most heavily populated districts of the Catalan capital are El Ensanche, San Martín and Sants-Montjuïc, according to data from Barcelona City Council.
Despite being one of the most attractive locations to live in Spain thanks to its cosmopolitan character, its great cultural, leisure and gastronomic offering, and the wide options in the labour market, house prices in Barcelona equal 4,637 euros per m2, on average, which makes it the only large city where house prices are lower now than they were before the coronavirus pandemic, according to data from the real estate big data platform Brainsre.
