With this modification of the General Plan, no new residences may be opened in the centre of the city, unless they are conversions of buildings that previously housed tourist accommodation or youth hostels.

On 27 May, in the plenary session of the Municipal Council, Barcelona City Council will approve a modification to the General Metropolitan Plan (MPGM) that will limit increases in the number of student residences in the city.

The council wants to regulate increases in the number of private student residences on community land. Currently, between projects already active and those planned, there are 79 residences in the city, with 13,800 beds on community land and other plots, in other words, those not classified as community. Of those residences, 18 have been approved in recent years and are in the process of obtaining their licenses.
