Analysis of the Shopping Centre Market During H1 2022

The retail sector -and, more specifically, the shopping centre segment– led the charge in terms of real estate investment during the first half of 2022. According to CBRE, investment in shopping centres consolidated its recovery with an increase in the number of transactions, as well as in demand and footfall.

Retail was also the asset group that grew by the most during the first half of the year, with a total transacted volume of more than 2.917 billion euros, eight times more than the previous year. That figure was due in large part to BBVA’s purchase of more than 629 branches from Merlin for 1.987 billion euros, which accounted for 70% of the investment in this type of asset. However, excluding that operation, the evolution was still positive YoY, with an investment volume of 930 million euros, 163% more than in 2021.
